Brittany/Andrew Forrest

Artist member since 2023
Woodstock, Ontario

Brittany/Andrew Forrest (she/her or he/him) is a queer Ontario-based surrealist artist and author. She focuses on character development through methods of drawing, sculpting, mold-making, and wording that stretches away from traditional approaches to represent her identity. She does this by assessing the behavior, such as a functions, associations, and interactions between articles. Forrest is persuaded by authors such as Anthony Burgess, Albert Camus, Carl Jung, Erin Manning, Franz Kafka, George Orwell, Haruki Murakami, and Sigmund Freud.

She began her study of the body through performing arts as a child. Rigorous observational skills transitioned into a thriving art and writing practice penetrating all facets of the body. Her practice now focuses on dissecting human exchange and perception to find correlations within the interplay between bodies. Forrest enlarges our collective understanding of what identity embodies, to affirm autonomy, by penetrating dysphoria, perception fabrications, power dynamics, and sensory perceptions. She surveys metaphysical and paraphysical pathways of gender and sexual reclamation, to further understand psychological defenses that create impenetrable borders representing the human condition. This is a cue for alienation, that touches the wombs of vulnerabilities. Fundamentally, Forrest endorses queerness as the uninterrupted imagination.

Forrest graduated from McMaster University with honors in Bachelor of Fine Arts, minoring in Art History. There she was awarded four academic scholarships, voted class choice, and earned the faculty award. Currently she is a Master of Fine Arts candidate at Western University, where she was granted the Graduate Thesis Research Award. Here Forrest engages in a thriving relationship with her mentors Christof Migone and Jessica Karuhanga, and many other talented artists. Recently, her creations were selected for the International Art Fair Mixing Identities (London, UK and Rome, IT), the New Realism/Altered Reality exhibition (New York City, NY), and published in the ARTSIN SQUARE magazine. Forrest published her first autobiographical book titled The Imaginary Imagination and a short story, Chair, in an art collective book titled Dystopia: A Visual Anthology in 2023.

How long have you been creating art?

I've been breaking crayons since I was two years old.

Which piece of art you've created is your favourite, and why?

Def Mec: Think about what you’ve done (Suppression) (2022): I value the techniques I developed while creating this piece. I also love the tension of it's roundness on the chair facing the corner.
